OBEDIENCE 1
For people-friendly & dog-friendly dogs and puppies. Curriculum is designed to control the dog's enthusiasm & energy, capture the dog's attention, and increase reliability of responses. We incorporate games into our training to make learning basic obedience skills enjoyable and stress-free for both dogs and humans. Dogs will learn focus, loose-leash walking, sit, down, stay, and recall. Issues such as housetraining, crate training, and chewing, will also be addressed.
CANINE LIFE & SOCIAL SKILLS (C.L.A.S.S.)
C.L.A.S.S. teaches real-life and practical skills, such as walking nicely on leash, waiting at the door, meeting strangers, table manners, attention, & coming when called. There are 3 class levels, and dogs earn their B.A., M.A., and PhD certificates after completion of classes and evaluation. Prerequisite: Obedience 1, or an equivalent class. If your dog has already had some obedience training, please contact me to discuss an evaluation to determine if the Canine Life and Social Skills class would be an appropriate class for you and your pup.
RALLY OBEDIENCE
Rally Obedience builds on basic obedience skills. The dog and handler proceed at their own pace through a course of designated stations. Each station has a sign that provides instructions regarding the skill to be performed. Rally Obedience encourages teamwork and communication between dog and handler. Prerequisite: Obedience 1, or an equivalent class.
WAG IT GAMES/SMART DOG GAMES
The Smart Dog Games Class is a fun class that enhances the connection between dogs and their handlers through exercises and games. Dogs learn such exercises as Paws Up on a platform, walking across a ladder, and jumping through a hoop. Dogs earn titles by completing Smart Dog tests, either in class or via video. For more information on this class, please go to wagitgames.com.
AKC CANINE GOOD CITIZEN CLASS
The AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program helps strengthen the bond between you and your pup, and also ensures that you'll be good neighbors and friends to everyone around you. CGC can also lay the foundation for Therapy Dog work. This is a 6 week class, and in the 6th class, you and your pup will have the option of taking the CGC test.
There are 10 Test Items/Essential Skills that we will work on in class, then your dog will be tested on these skills if you choose to take the test at the end of class. These items include:
1. Accepting a friendly stranger
2. Sitting politely for petting
3. Appearance and grooming
4. Out for a walk (walking on a loose lead)
5. Walking through a crowd
6. Sit and down on command and Staying in place
7. Coming when called
8. Reaction to another dog
9. Reaction to distractions
10. Supervised separation
After successful completion of all 10 items in the test, you can choose to register your dog with AKC, and your dog will have CGC listed as a title on his/her official AKC title record. You may then use the suffix "CGC" after your dog's name.
Or you can choose to just receive the CGC certificate only, and CGC will not appear on the dog's AKC title record.
For more information on the CGC test, please go on www.akc.org and click on Canine Good Citizen.

Darlene Frederick, IAABC-ADT
Dogs have been a major part of my life from the time I was a child, training my own dogs to have good manners, walk politely with me, and do a variety of tricks. As an adult, I was bitten by the dog show bug, and trained and showed my dogs in performance events, including Obedience, Agility, and Rally Obedience. I have had experience teaching group classes, and training dogs and their pet parents on a one-one basis. I have a B.S. in Biology, and I am an International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC) Accredited Dog Trainer (IAABC-ADT), and a member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT). I am a Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive (LIMA) Compliant trainer, using positive and humane techniques to achieve training objectives. I am also a certified APDT Canine Life & Socials Skills (C.L.A.S.S.) Instructor and Evaluator, an AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator, and an AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Evaluator.
My Training Philosophy
My ultimate goal for training is to help your dog become the best family member possible. After volunteering at our local shelter and seeing the heartbreak of dogs surrendered because of behavioral issues, I've become determined to help dogs overcome any problems they may have, in order to remain in their homes. I realize no two dogs are alike, and I will work with you and your dog to achieve the goals you desire. For some people, that may mean making your dog a valued companion and your best friend, while others may want to experience the teamwork and excitement that comes from competing with your dog in the show ring.
I employ only positive training methods when working with your dog. I do not use prong collars, choke chains, electronic (shock) collars, or any aversive training methods, nor do I allow them in my classes. Using positive reinforcement helps dogs become eager to learn, attentive, and capable of performing to the best of their abilities, making them wonderful family members.
